Can't comment on the first situation, but we certainly saw the second from
HP World this year. The shared Internet connection was soooo slow that we
were unable to do anything on our 3000; we were VT logged into it from a PC
in our booth, and we were seeing our connection drop every minute or two.
It was so bad we gave up using it.
 
I'm not entirely sure it's R1 though; I also suspect that there are some
settings in NMMGR that contribute, though I thought we had all our timeouts
and timers set pretty high...
