Permanent space is what it implies - space allotted for permanent file
storage. Transient space is used by MPE/iX for temporary data
structures (not to be confused with temporary files!) - think of it as
virtual storage or a memory swap area. How you configure these depends
upon whether you're talking about the system volume domain vs. private
volumes (user volume sets), LDEV1 vs other disk devices, etc.
Transient space may only exist on the system volume set
(MPEXL_SYSTEM_VOLUME_SET), and LDEV1 may only be configured to use
about 75% of its formatted size as permanent space (I say 'about'
because the larger devices now available for use as LDEV 1 - 2Gb and
4Gb - may be allowed larger permanent space allocations by volume
management). Other disk volumes in the system domain may be configured
- and, as far as I know, HP still recommends this - to allow 100%
allocation for *either* permanent or transient space. Of course, your
mileage may vary depending upon the size of your system disk domain
and/or, if you use private volumes, whether permanent storage on the
system volume set fluctuates greatly (lots of output spoolfiles, system
log files, user files (hopefully not! :-), etc.

In a previous post I had suggested that our system (947 NOVA) seemed to be
running slower on MPEiX 5.0 than on 4.0. Several responses to my post
suggested that I look at my Transient and Permanent free space settings.
Having recently performed an INSTALL I know that they are set at 100%
Transient. Is that bad? Would someone be kind enough to explain these two
settings? Is there an optimum setting for Transient and Permanent? What other
variables should be taken into consideration?

Thanks!
