I got 8 and a carrot.
Why? My math is bad (so I got 8 instead of 7 :-) and 'six' sounds
similar to 'sex', so that's why some of us think of carrots.
As to the latter, it's been shown in several studies in the field of
linguistic psychology that when people are asked to recall a sequence of
numbers they tend to confuse the numbers '9' and '5' more often than any
other combination, on the order of somthing like 20 times more often.
(Forgive the vagueness... I learned this way back in college and my
memory ain't what it used to be -- at least the way I remember it
being...) So it's theorized that language is closely associated with
memory, and we remember things based (partly at least) on the way they
sound when spoken. Hence 'five' is confused with 'nine', 'six' with
'sex', etc. (Before anyone rushes to condemn this idea, please note that
I said it's not *my* theory; I'm just passing it along for your
amusement.)
It's also the reason, the theory goes, that most people can't remember
anything prior to their second or third birthday: no language skills, no
ability to remember except in disconnected, random ways. People with
better language skills also tend to have better memories.
Finally, if you can't figure out why sex makes some people think of a
carrot, well, I won't say it on a public list; if you have to ask, you
don't want to know.
