...when it's in your own backyard :-). And when it's just for 1 day.

Normally, Mark & I would have made travel & sightseeing plans for attending
HP World. This year, though, the thing is just up the freeway. So the
only travel plan was to estimate what time to leave the house to arrive in
time for Carly's 10am speech :-). And no sightseeing was planned in
advance, but afterwards since we were sorta-kinda nearby, we drove by the
L.A. house I used to live in before my family moved to Orange County in the
'70s. And it was hard to see in the dark at that.

So, this wasn't your typical HP World from the start. That was also
evident in the Expo hall, where sound levels were actually tolerable,
unlike prior years when I had to wear earplugs. And unlike prior years,
for the first time I had no Adager booth to hang out in! No, not typical
at all.

And to make things even weirder, no donna or Wirt! I did, however, get to
meet John Burke and compliment him on his NewsWire net.digest column. I
may not fully understand it with my rudimentary 3000 knowledge, but it's
always a pleasant reading style, and I do enjoy the parts I *can*
comprehend :-). I also got to meet *the* Neil Armstrong! Nice fellow.
Any relation to Lance? :-).

To complete the "this isn't really HP World" feeling, JD Edwards had a
booth this year after sitting out a few years. The reason I know of them
is that my employer adapted their "One World" accounting product a few
years ago, and it's been a migraine ever since (I don't think the system
was really designed for government use). So I hesitatingly approached the
booth and mentioned that I use JDE. When asked what I thought I initially
replied, "no comment" in a joking way, but they prodded and listened
politely to what I had to say. And when I asked for 2 more of their light
freebie to give to my fellow suffering co-workers, they were all smiles and
said, "sure." Finally, a no-hassle transaction with JDE ;-).
