I wonder if this reflects a greater degree of in-house programming
by MPE customers - in addition to the somewhat greater workload demands
on a UNix system administrator (actually, what concerns me, is the extremely
large amount of knowledge needed for Unix sys admin)?

IF MPE customers are more likely to do in-house development, it is that much
more important for HP to invest in compiler and development enviornment
support for MPE.
