Could someone pls comment on the following problem:
During daytime we put a new tape in one tape (casette) station, and
receives "unlabeled tape mounted on ldev ..." on the console. During the
dark hours, i.e. at 1 a.m. we start a backup job. This job of course locks
all databases and orher relevant files at startup. The problem however, is
that occasionally there is a problem with the tape which in turn makes the
back up job wait for some operator intervention, e.g. reload of the tape.
Then, in the morning when procuction is supposed to start, prosesses will
not log onn due to locked databases. Someone is then called upon to
abortjob the backup. This is clearly not satisfactory.
Is there a simple way to automatically kill the backup job if it hangs
or better, is there a way to make the backup prosess more secure ?
We would like to avoid a solution with temporary backup to disk. TIA for
any comment or tips on improving this situation.
