Sure you can.  I know Lars Appel has some examples.  You can find the link
on http://www.editcorp.com/Personal/Lars_Appel/SockSamp/.  Since you are
using Cobol, I would highly recommend looking at
QSS tool for doing sockets in Cobol
(http://www.qss.com/Sales/Qsdk/pqsdk.htm).  If you are doing web or Java
stuff with socket, you may want to check out ANSI's products.
http://www.advnetsys.com/  There is one more company that I'm missing,  just
changed their name.  Used to have a product called AIM.  I'm sure someone
will fill in the blank.
