Scott,

What John stated fit the symptoms so closely I've already taken action. 
I have rewritten the split scripts to do all the other volumes, pause 10 
seconds and then split the master. Hopefully this will remedy the problem.

And yes, the operations staff attempted a couple of opens and close 
before rebooting. Just seems once the volume leaves the table there is 
no way to get it back (short of a reboot).
