IIRC - 42 was the answer to 6 times 9. Which is correct.

The mice were the primary intelligent species, whose sole purpose on earth
was to solve this problem.

Mice have 4 paws (3 toes on each) and a tail. Therefore using base 13 rather
than base 10

6 * 9 (base 13) = 42 !

(Think it's about time I re-read Hitchikers Guide...)
