Hello Friends:

Alfredo Rego points out while steering us all to a 1994 article I wrote on
the non-IMAGE database choices for the 3000:

"It's uncanny to see the currency of everything else that Ron said "way
back then" in digital prehistory."

Indeed, the cost of a Hundred User license is as slippery as ever, but we
have a very current benchmark on the sale price of an 8-seat Oracle
software license on the HP 3000. Those eight seats will cost you $9,000 if
you're a first time buyer of Oracle and you've installing onto the lowest
tier of HP 3000. You've got to purchase before Oct. 31.

The real cost includes the hardware, of course, and there's one recent
report from this list on the horsepower needed for a hundred-user HP *9000*
license from Carl Kemp, who stated:

"Incidentally, looks like (from the recommendations of others who have used
Oracle in similar applications) we'll be going for a K410 with 4 processors
and 1/2 GB of memory. I started with 384MB memory (our 947 which supports
100 users has 192MB) but was told that that would not be enough."

A K410 four-way HP 9000 is approximately the equivalent of an HP 959/400,
for those of you pricing systems. Some reports indicate that horsepower
needs for Oracle are not as great if you choose the HP 3000 as the database
platform.

We've got an article on HP's Oracle sale, and what tools you'll need to
make better use of it from an IMAGE background, in our October NewsWire.
Paid subscribers can access the issue now from the Always Online Link at
the NewsWire's FreeNews site: http://www.3000newswire.com/newswire.

We're also hoping to uncover some early tips on this year's new 3000
systems within the next few days (they're just now entering the HP
Corporate Price List), and we'll post those at Always Online by Friday.
