There is firmware differences between the HP3000/9XX and the HP9000/8XX
machines. We "upgraded" an HP3k/917 to an HP9k/817 at considerable cost.
Which is a good reason that companies should look before they leap to
HP-UX.... (The cost of HP-UX is artificially inflated because that's what
the market will bear)
As far as I know the chip architectures between like systems is generally
the same: PA7100.
 
ps. Their are alot of peculiarities and idiosyncrasies between different
systems types and I am not sure which systems can  handle the os change
operation.
