Wait just a minute, Bruce!  I think you have a very legitimate claim
for faulty cartridges.  Clearly, they are not empty, yet the chip is
reporting that they are.  You'll probably have to swallow the one you
opened, but the others should be returned for replacement.

Same thing happened to me with a black ink cartridge for my
HP 1150C Office Jet Pro.  It kept making me re-align the cartridge,
then immediately reporting that I needed to replace it.  I finally
gave up and replaced it with another new cartridge, and its been
working fine ever since (about 6 months later).  I returned the unused
faulty cartridge for replacement.   Which reminds me, I haven't got
the replacement yet!
