You recall correctly. An HFS file or directory created under an MPE group
has a 16 character limit. However, the maximum length of an entire HFS path
is 512 (or is it 511?). So, once you get below the MPE group level, you can
create filenames as long as  512-len(pwd).  (Of course, if you're in "pure"
POSIX land (ie, not under a "classic" MPE /ACCOUNT/GROUP/), then you could
create exceedingly long file names at the top level just under root)
