HP does their best to insure "backwards" compatibility (ie. a
program written on an earlier version of the OS will run as-is
on a later version of the OS), but "forwards" compatibility
isn't claimed. The reason for this is that the compiler may
utilize features of the new OS that are not available under the
earlier version so your program may not run correctly (if at all)
in that environment. That's the reason my clients always test
their existing programs under a new release of the MPE, migrate
the production systems to the new version first, then migrate
their development systems last. That way they can continue
to release code compiled under the earlier version to all of their
production systems (whether they have been migrated up or not).

In most cases, you shouldn't have any problems compiling under
5.5 and running on 5.0, but there is no guarantee of compatibility.

Backwards in what way? Do you mean that a compiled program on 5.5
will not run on 5.0??? I don't think that's true.
