'A growing number of software engineers believe that computers have become
so essential to daily life that society will eventually be unwilling to
keep giving software firms a free legal pass. "It's either going to be a
big product liability suit, or the government will come in and regulate the
industry," says Jeffrey Voas, chief scientist of Cigital Labs, a
software-testing firm in Dulles, VA. "Something's going to give. It won't
be pretty, but once companies have a gun to their head, they'll figure out
a way to improve their code."'
