Thanks Stan for all the invaluable help you have given me on this issue
(and others too!)

A little heads up -- the original program written in SPL works correctly
with no program abort.

However as the SPL program is a CM program I needed to write a switch stub
in SWAT to call this program from an NM Cobol mainline.
The stub aborted for some reason I could not figure out. I gave up on that
and decided to redo the thing in Pascal. Seemed simple enough. I should
have known better.

I suspect the GENMSG routine in NM Pascal is not the same as the GENMSG
routine in CM SPL.
