Someone mentioned awhile back that they though America West's stock id
of "HP" came about because they started out as Hawaii Pacific.  Looks
like they purchased the AOC from Hawaiian Pacific, whatever that means.

I sent a request to America West, and they now replied with the
following:

Thank you for visiting americawest.com. 
America West's stock symbol is AWA. However, our two digit IATA code is
HP. Every airline has a two digit International Air Transport
Association (IATA) code to identify itself. The IATA code that was
assigned to America West was HP. At the time, America West had purchased
our Airline Operating Certificate from Hawaiian Pacific. The IATA code
HP was then given to America West Airlines.
