Here’s some basic dirt that you should know from the factory-side about
HPCPUNAME and HPSUSAN. The following info is from publicly-available
service manuals, but it’s all spread out and would take precious time to
organize it, so I’m pointing out the highlights for you.

HP is training more and more CE’s on the e3000 due to its growing numbers,
but many are still in training so your knowledge on this subject can
really help them out. (It also shows these new HP-CE’s just how tight our
community is!)

Here goes:

1)First off, CPUNAME and HPSUSAN live in EPROM (s) called “Stable-Storage”
Those EPROM’s live in different spots in the machine depending on your
model.

2)Never allow anyone other than a HP CE to change your Stable Storage.
This is for legal reasons as well as your own protection. If your HP-CE
forgets something, then it’s on their nickel to come back out and fix it.

3)The HPSUSAN number is an algorithm using the systems SERIAL NUMBER and
the ORIGINAL base-model number at the time of manufacture Therefore when
you upgrade within the same family, (959 to 979 as an example) the HPSUSAN
number should not change.

4)However, HPCPUNAME should ALWAYS change whenever you upgrade your
processors (i.e. 928RX to 968RX or 979-100 to 979-200 as examples).

5)FYI: MPE launches all present and properly configured processors at time
of boot. MPE will also manage the use of those processors while the
system is running, transparent for the most part to software and users.

FYI: If your CE changes any parts for whatever reason that have
Stable-Storage chips on them, the CE should use SS_CONFIG to bring
Stable-Storage back into the above specs. No exceptions.

If your HPSUSAN number DID change, then a step was missed and you need to
call the HP Response Center.

Hope this helps,

Chris the geek

However the HPCPUNAME will change to indicate the number of processors.
JMS,Cognos and others charge different amounts for the license and
maintenance based on the CPU count AS indicated by HPCPUNAME.

Occasionally the HP CE will forget to change the HPCPUNAME, but that
doesn't make it right. When that has happened.... HP must make another
trip out (on their tab) to fix the darn value.
