Tracy,
If your 6.0 system has the right patches, then you'll need to make sure
that the file 'nsswitch.net.sys' exists with the following command:
hosts : files[SUCCESS=return NOTFOUND=continue] dns
If the needed patches are missing then you could add that entry into
'nsdir' (using nnmgr) since, by default and providing the nsdir has not
been omitted, the HP3K will first look there. The help text from NNMGR of
the screen where the default 'name search method' is set (You get there:
NMMGR, F1,F2,F2,F1,F1) says:
Name search methods and order
Determines the order in which node name information
will be looked up. Node name information can be
retrieved from: the Network Directory, the Probe
Protocol, or the Probe Protocol Proxy. Configurable
values are:
1 = Network Directory
2 = Probe
3 = Probe Proxy
0 = Choice Omitted
If all search methods fail, the system will try
to resolve the name using the domain name resolver.
Default order: 2, 3, 1 (Probe, Probe Proxy, Network
Directory)
Range: 0-3

Is there a way to make HP3000 (MPE 6.0) networking look first in HOSTS,
then fail over to the nameserver(s) specified in RESLVCONF?
My understanding is simply NO, but I'm hoping for an easy migration to
all-external DNS...
