For heavens's sake - are you too young to rememeber Civil Defense? Where the local communities managed their emergency services mostly with volunteers? Before FEMA in other words.
Matt put it about right, neither party or choice was optimal, and both made some pretty horrendous gaffes. On the other paw, we don't know if the post that was so offensive was posted by the stated author or not, or if it was just some stupid zombie machine somewhere spreading hate and discontent. I personal don't want to make the effort to find out either.
Matt put it pretty well - though I would tend more to libertarian with a small "l". ;)
By the way, I suggest editing the offensive material out of replies. It was certainly offensive to some folks, and it is only polite to not keep repeating and spreading it. I don't think anyone here would call that censorship, since the original text is available in the archives.
