I wouldn't think so.  One thing that is tripping you up is the fact that when 
you said you "located all the files on the LDEV", how sure are you of that 
statement?  Unless you are very carefull, you'll likely get "all the files 
with the first extent on LDEV x" (and will generally have as many or more 
extents on other disks)  When you restored the files, did you specify that 
they should return to the specific LDEV, or just to "class disk" [default]?  
If to the class, MPE will try to "spread" the file(s) evenly accross 
spindles, which will likely end up with more fragmentation on the OTHER 
drives!

True, there weren't many vendors that made defragging utilities (the only one 
that comes to mind is Lund's product, but perhaps bradmark or quest made 
something?)  but as far as I know, however, these are still being marketed 
[after all, they weren't being marketed by HP proper...]  Of course, if there 
is no budget for software purchases, well, can't help you there ;)
