With the thread a while back on this list concerning jobs
going overseas, I just wanted to let the list know that it
is happening in reverse in my home town of St. Martinville, LA.
A Chinese company (sorry I forgot the name) is wanting to purchase
a large plant in my home town that was once occupied by a large
textile company. This company from China wants to convert it to
an assembly plant to assemble electronic equipment I believe.
Apparently there are tax advantages to assembling something
in the US as compared to shipping in already assembled equipment.
They are planning on using local labor. Hopefully the deal will
go through. It will mean a big boost to the economy of my home
town which was hurt when the textile company left town.
Just an FYI,
Barry
PS. Minor irritation on. Please notice that in my subject line
I used the word "overseas" and not "offshore". Growing up in
south Louisiana the work "offshore" meant just that "off shore"
(not on land, any land). It usually referred to oil wells in
the Gulf of Mexico. Okay, minor irritation off.
