Ok... first of all Ellington field is ok... but even Columbus Georgia
before they modernized in 1992 (or so) was more modern than Ellington! We
checked our own luggage onto the "Bug Smasher" (technical term used in the
airline industry for anything where all seats are simutaneously aisle and
window seats hehehe Also, the first time I flew through Ellignton was
returning home from being in Panama for manuevers... want to discuss a bad
airport... Panama City when you have no passports other than your military
ID and Operation Just Cause only finished up scant days before ... shudder
Seriously on the airports.... My wife and I almost always try to fly
direct to Hobby as it is closest to her sister's house... but have flown
through Bush IAH lots ... very very big... Pick which ever airport is
nearest to where you are staying :)
Next Point.... You *MUST* go to the Space Center!!! it is AWESOME! The
Saturn V sitting on static display is great... I have always been awe
struck by the Saturn V's ... guess it has to do with the watching 'em lift
off as a kid :) (Hey I always said I was a young'un... at least for a few
more days) My Sister and Brother in law and Mom in Law live about 10
minutes from NASA so we always get to go visit it when we are down there...
The food is great... the land flat (what do you expect from a Native
Oregonian hehe) and the drivers .... well... watch NASCAR at Bristol and
you will see I-45 during the evening hours... I ain't kiddin' you!
Seriously, Houston is one huge Town! It seemed like we drove for an
hour just to cross it at 65+ mph (I can't convert to TKPH (Texas Kilometers
per hour) hehe) There are all sorts of things to do and fun places to
go... and you are only about 8 hours or so away from one of the most
hospitable List Members Ever... Our own Wirt in Las Cruces which was also
great to visit ...

I am being deluged by friends asking me for travel information to GHRUG.
In
an attempt to forestall further requests, I thought I would post this
message.
There are two big airports serving the Houston area; the big one, the
biggest airport in the world, is Bush IAH. It is located about 15-20 miles
north of Houston, that's 250-300 kilometers for our metric friends. (In
Texas, kilometers are very small.) IAH is the hometown for Continental
Airlines and receives flights from airlines all over the world. There is
usually a big-ass Antonov on the tarmac, for some reason. I saw it when I
landed coming back from somewhere last week.
The other big airport is Hobby HOU. This one is located about 5 miles (80
kilometers) south of Houston. It actually is between UHCL and Houston. It
is an older airport and is not served by many airlines, but I think
Southwest flies from there. It's been several years since I have been
there
and it was because I lost a bet and had to pick up somebody. It is
conceivable that you can get to UHCL by taxi.
There is yet a third airport, called Ellington Field EFD. This one is very
close to UHCL, and Continental used to fly a puddle jumper from EFD to IAH,
but that stopped in September 2004. Ellington Field hosts the Wings over
Houston air show every year (this coming weekend,) and it's where NASA
parks
its fleet of T-38 Talon and other airplanes.
Speaking of NASA, UHCL is very close to NASA and you should take the time
to
visit Space Center Houston. I think it's only a few miles away. Galveston
is about 40 miles south of the conference, right on I-45.
Houston is extremely large and if you want to visit anything more than UHCL
and NASA, you better have a car or know someone who has a car.
The program looks great; I think GHRUG has done a good job setting up the
only remaining user conference.
