I remember reading in a Jack London novel, White Fang IIRC, that the =
author could tell when it was 50-below because his spit would crackle =
and freeze before it hit the ground. That little factoid (don't know =
the truth of it, but it sounds good) has been rattling around in my head
=
for 35 years. As I age, there is getting to be a lot more empty space =
in there, but that's a different story...
Actually I think it is:
-50 if your spit crackles when it hits the ground
-70 if your spit crackles on the way down
I was lucky, during my 3 years in Alaska I only saw -50 a few times and
never actually got to -70.
But I do remember spilling a fresh, hot cup of coffee one time and
watching it freeze before it got more than 1/2 way out of the cup.
