I'm not quite sure what "defended shopping" means, my first guess is that it
must be an Ontarionism.

Most people on this list do not know what a Canadian Tire CTC is; it's
something like a K-Mart but without the helpful service. :-)

Next month will mark 30 years since I moved from Canada so I'm not up on the
latest social trends in the Great White North.

I was going to ask which phone you finally decided on, but you answered
that. Good for you.

(#2014-127)

Gentle listeners,

An update for Denys
For the reason that most Canadians live within 200 Kms of the US border the
retail community has defended shopping with adopting Black Friday ... As an
example Ottawa's Rideau Centre shopping mall opens at 7 am as does Canadian
Tire CTC actually is open at 7 am today, Friday and Saturday.

And with the Canadian dollar being down there will be an influx of American
shoppers into Canada.

This Canadian Black Friday started several years ago but is mainstream by
now.

While I know we are lucky to have folks from all over the planet on this
lsit, and some may not celebrate Thanksgiving as it's a U.S. holiday, the
spirit of the holiday is universal - grateful for what we have, and time
spent with family and friends (and food and football!).

So again, Happy Thanksgiving to you all!!!!

Thanks, Ray, and thanks to everybody in HP3000 land for the past
somewhat-quiet year of MPE entertainment. I've not seen an HP3000 for 5
years (and I miss them!) but would like to thank everyone on this list for
another year of community with a bunch of good eggheads I now regard as old
friends.

Thank you all for being out there. I wish upon each of you a very happy
Thanksgiving day spent with the people you love.

Thanks Ray and the same to you.

I will point out that Thanksgiving is not just an America holiday, it is
also a Canadian holiday and there a few other places have similar events.

You might want to read up about the holiday on (gasp) Wikipedia; they do a
pretty good job.

Canadian Thanksgiving ("Action de grace" -similar to "coup de grace"- in
French) is the second Monday in October, when we in the US celebrate
Columbus Day. The menu is essentially the same as in the US, as it's pretty
much a North American feast.

I will point out that Black Friday is uniquely American. Be careful out
there.

Unfortunately not! and its getting longer

The battle between retailers to boost sales on Black Friday has turned the
shopping sensation named after a single day into a week-long marathon.

British retailers on Friday morning

lasting at some until close of play next Monday, Amazon said it would start
cutting prices at 8am on Monday morning.

It was a tongue-in-cheek observation. I'm sure other places have similar
events and certainly with the spread of Amazon and other on-line retailers
operating worldwide, this quaint shopping frenzy custom had to spread.

Years back retailers started opening their doors for business earlier than
usual and that slowly wound its way back to midnight. One of my customers
is a large electronics and appliances retailer and they do an unbelievable
amount of business on Black Friday. Along with everyone else they started
to encroach earlier than midnight and now it starts at 6:00PM on
Thanksgiving Day. I think that's rather sad as Thanksgiving is my favorite
holiday and was a great reason to have everything shutdown and for people to
stay home or with friends. That's in the past now.

On television, I see that Black Friday has started on Monday for a lot of
stores and Amazon and other etailers have been bombarding me with early BF
stuff.

Gosh, nothing says Happy Thanksgiving like a Mattress Mac ad for Black
Friday sales right now at his store. (Houstonians will catch the
reference.)

That's because Canadian days are only worth about 86% of what a U.S. day is
