If you are looking for a GUI interface for Query like functions, No matter
what you will need some type of background process running. It's something
that GUI apps, that access Image/Allbase databases require. At least on
the HP3000.

The HP3000 has tools, other than Query, that can do database mods, SUPRTOOL
and DBEDIT for example. But if you are still looking for a good GUI, then
I would look at ODBC and maybe Microsoft's Access database. It creates a
easy GUI to create other apps, or just to modify data through spreadsheets.

I've set this up before. If you want to talk, let's take it offline.
