An interesting topic for IPROF, from a clipping that a friend just slipped
into my "in" box:

... if you can't rally the troops when
the company's very existence is at stake, then there's
something wrong. Bill Gates (yes, dear reader, it's a
rare industry topic that doesn't involve him) didn't
have this problem when he declared war on Netscape.
All he had to say was jump and the employees asked
       how high.

Is Mr. Platt going to attend IPROF to say "jump" to his faithful HP3000
troops? The HP3000 loyalists have been jumping (with amazing skill) for a
long time and would LOVE to jump even more, to show the world what the
HP3000 can do.

As an example of how the HP3000 outshines the
competition, the HP3000 has its IMAGE database
management system, which allows something unique
        in the industry:

          - Native-mode intrinsic access for high-performance
            online transaction processing involving hundreds
or thousands of concurrent users querying and
            updating vital business information.

          - Common SQL for standard access.

It is to be noted by Mr. Platt, in his "jump" speech,
that Oracle and the other common DBMSs are handicapped
because they can only communicate via SQL and have not
been able to deliver on the clamor of their users to
provide what IMAGE has always had: A fast intrinsic
        access.

HP has it with IMAGE. Why not make it widely known,
        with pride?

Ken Sletten, IPROF's Chairman, works for the U.S. Navy. I am sure there
are many words used in the Navy to describe the kind of feeling I am
(feebly, perhaps) trying to communicate. "Cowardice" might NOT be one of
them. "Guts" might be one of them. Whatever it is, Bill Gates has it.
Good for him.

All the HP3000 troops need is for the big leader (Mr. Platt) to say "jump".
He'll be surprised to see how high everyone can jump. The HP3000 troops
have guts! I know, because I have known them, in the trenches, for a
couple of decades. And they are readier now than ever for a good show!

How exciting, indeed!
