Cortlandt,

I can't speak for the list itself (as that's Jeff's doing), but
as for the comp.sys.hp.mpe <-> HP3000-L gateway, that's here at
Easy Does It Technologies LLC. The costs are very low:
. $40/year - Reliable Usenet Newsgroup access
. $40 (one time) Cold Fusion NNTP dll (to give CF access to NNTP).
. $?? My time in coding the gateway template
  All other costs are shared:
. Internet access (we use a cable router with a bi-directional
   T1 equivalent speed)
. The e3000.org domain name registration (we intended to do more
community service type things from here, but never really got
   going. We still may though)
. Space and time on our main CF application server (the gateway
kicks off every 15 minutes to transfer messages/email)
. POP3/SMTP email account (again on our server)
. MS Access database (to hold some control info)
. My time when a message gets "hung up" (this happens occasionally for
one reason or another. Rewriting the NNTP dll would help that, but
as its very infrequent, its not currently worth the effort).

Overall its very low cost, very low maintenance (just like the 3000 :).
I'm sure the actual list gives Jeff more headaches than the gateway does
to me simply because I only have to deal with two entities (the gateway's
HP3000-L user and the Netnews user) instead of the 1000+ list users. Stop
and think about the email volume that passes through UTC for this list
(100+ messages a day * 1000+ users). That's a lot of email! For me, its
just the 100+ messages :) We provide this service gladly and have no
intention on stopping any time soon!!

Regards,
Michael L Gueterman
