Brent,
First, I would recommend running CONFIG/SUMMARY in NETTOOL to make sure you didn't leave a definition of that gateway somewhere.  If it doesn't show up, the only way I know of for getting unconfigured gateways into the table is to receive ICMP redirect messages.  It could be that some router somewhere on your network has not been reconfigured for the new gateway address (or hasn't had its cache flushed) and is sending redirects to you.  Until you find the source of those redirects, if that is what is happening, use the GATEDOWN command in NETTOOL to disable the 44 gateway.
