Bruce,

Sorry, but I can't help to write: "Yes, the logfiles!" In my last HP3000-shop (an airline), I dropped console-printers many years ago. Forests of paper piled up behind them (never in an orderly fashion, of course), and when you really *had* to see what happened on a specific date/time, the printer had ran out of paper or ribbon during the night.

We actually had an outdated LaserJet # connected; but only fired it up when you e.g. was starting the system up and was expecting some special behaviour.

In my opinion the logfiles are the only reliable source of information today on what happened on a specific time/date and it's easy to write or otherwise aquire fine software, that reads the logfiles and extracts the information to your favourite word-processing environment. (Using SYSDIAG, LOGTOOL and then Qedit with a couple of macros was sufficient for me and didn't cost a penny since we already had Qedit).

Yes, they do take up some space - but file them on tape or include them in the long-surviving monthly backups, if that is part of your backup-strategy.

OK, serial printers...:
In Europe we can get a Swiss printer-brand: Wenger. They are some of the most rugged printers I've seen, extremely robust and reliable - but of course, they are definitely not free. Data Products (US manufacturer) once made high quality printers for the HP market and maybe still do. Then there are lots of OKIs, Epsons and similar low-cost matrix-printers, having a serial interface is a cheap option in many cases. No, the serial interfaced printer is still alive, even now as HP are dropping their support on them.

Regards,

Hans-Ole

Can anybody think of an alternative for a "console printer", slaved to
the console terminal?

Bruce.
