Just a follow up on the status of this problem.
 
It has been traced to a faulty cache on the second processor board - I'd
been trying to tell HP for 2 weeks that the problem was hardware and not
software related, but they insisted that the B800 was a problem with the OS.
 
After much pain, they decided to check the HPMC status at bootup and voila,
they then were convinced.
