That crossed my mind, but the files are actually built as TEMPorary
files first and only once I have written to and closed the file in my
Cobol program do I then issue the command to SAVE the file. (The save
command is issued immediately after the Cobol CLOSE statement).

So the reading "process" should have be able to detect the file without
any conflict.

I'm wondering whether there's some log file on the FTP server that's the
cause of the "file accessed exclusively" error. Didn't think I had
logging turned on.

I'm not aware of any changes to our JINETD job or the relevant
configuration files and the FTP transfer process has been stable for
other 3 years !

Don't think the HP3000s have been patched recently either.

I'm putting in a work-around tonight to minimize the impact of the
failure, but I really would prefer to know what's going wrong.

Tony:

At first glance, it seems that there is a timing issue. The file being
read is opened in exclusive mode, meaning that maybe the file has not
been closed yet by the previous process (the file is still being written

to).
