You can't unilaterally change modems in synchronous applications.  The
modem you're using now (most likely a UDS 208 A/B) is compatible with
similar 208 modems on the foreign machines.  You can only upgrade (to
V.32 for instance [UDS V.3225/V.3225/V.34 and many others]) if all of
your partners have V.32 support as well.

If you're using HP's RJE, your autodial choices are limited to Bell
801, BTW, so don't get your hopes up.  Most newer modems support the
V.25 autodial protocol, but HP's RJE doesn't.

Our RJE product _does_ support V.25 autodialing, as well as Bell 801.
