One possibility is that you need to have the line

export TERM=${TERM:-hp2392a}

in your /etc/profile file.  However, since the problem doesn't occur when you
log on as MANAGER.SYS, it may be a permissions problem.  For details on how
to fix the POSIX file permissions, see my "Plug and Play POSIX" paper at
http://www.allegro.com (HP has done a great job fixing virtually all of the
problems I address in MPE/iX 6.0, so make sure you read the paper while it's
still relevent!).
