I am not sure I can shed much light on this, but we also got one. FWIIW,
here goes:

1.  The printer takes  a LONG time to warm up.
2.  It seems to take a long time to get print data, but once it has it print
quite fast.  We have
     it attached to a PC, so I don't know exactly how this is done with the
3000 and jet
     direct, particularly does the print data get re-downloaded when
repeating the same
     page or what?
3.  I am not familiar with LJ4500 so I don't know what speed you feel is
adequate.

Bottom line, the Xerox Techtronix can be quirky but it has its uses.
