Kent,

You may have reduced the CPU by tuning the prefetch, and the I/O is helped by the prefetch, but
you have not addressed the memory issue (swapping).

Part of the key to SUPRTOOL's success is that it does large fast serial reads.  Even though you
and I know that the program only needs this information once, the OS (MPE) still tries to cache
this large data set.

The "set makeabsent on"  sets a switch that tells the OS not to cache what it just read in.

Give it a go, I have had good and not so good results.

Usually it will be good for the on-line users, sometimes it is not so good for the performance of
the job.
