Actually I understand the dilemma.

When I, as priviledged "MANAGER.SYS" want to see when a file
was last used for it's "Intended Purpose" I would normally
want to see when it was last accessed with my LISTF.

When I, as priviledged "MANAGER.SYS" want to look at a
file "Above and Beyond" it's normal use, I would NOT want
to have it's Access Date modified. Simply because as
MANAGER.SYS, I use Access Dates to determine when "others"
used the file.

Once a few years ago, before I had known about putting
KEEPAMDATES in the MPEXMGR file, I had only used ;KEEPAMDATES
manually, religiously. I used this scheme to determine when
the last time a simple Quiz report was used. If a report
was two years old, I would look at it myself using ;KEEPAMDATES
to find out what it did. Then ask Managemen or Users "Why do
we have this stinking report if we don't use it?"

Then one day a new programmer printed all the Quiz code to
his screen using MPEX a wild card and the "Dontask" feature.

Needless to say, he ruined my scheme of checking access dates
to determine last date a file was used.

Later on, when I found out I could put it in MPEXMGR, I did.

Here follows some things I found out you could put in MPEXMGR
so that when using MPEX, you don't mess up certain dates.
Which means that these dates change only when non-MPEX actions
(read "normal use") touches a file:

setvar mpexaltfilekeepamdates=1
setvar mpexcopykeepamdates=1
setvar mpexprintkeepamdates=1
setvar mpexreleasekeepamdates=1
setvar mpexrenamekeepamdates=1
setvar mpexsecurekeepamdates=1

OK, I'll bite: why should viewing the file not be considered as an
access?

The only significant fault I've found in MPE's handling of file dates is
that copied files don't get the same datestamps as the original.
Although the current handling might fit into a strict, blind
interpretation of "creating a copy", it doesn't match with what we see
on most other systems.
