I've haven't done a CD-ROM drive, but have added C3010 and C2490 disc
drives; it's simple as long as you follow the instructions.  As to
supportability issues if you do this yourself, I get the feeling that kind
of depends on your relationship with your CE.
 
If you install it and it doesn't work (or screws up your systems) you have a
couple of options:
 - place a hardware call to get HP to come out and fix the situation.
 - de-install it then schedule HP to perform the installation.
