Terry,

NWS Corp. has twelve new LineJets purchased during the last year, all with
the Printer Manager. The internal ethernet card plus this software offers a
new level of interaction with the printer. With this option the printer has
a web server for checking status and configuration. Once you enter the IP
address on the front panel and connect the internal ethernet card to your
network, you can browse to the IP address of your printer and set up most of
the configuration options. You can also download new versions of the
printers firmware over this connection (something that is not an option with
an external jet direct). This alone would be enough to make me want only the
internal ethernet with printer manager version of any LineJet available,
(because you can take advantage of new firmware as it becomes available)
Hopefully someday HP will get these printers talking as nicely with the
spooler as the old 2564s did. The problem with these printers talking to the
spooler appears as this, you have a 5000 page report, around page 2000 -
paper jam, you lose half a page. When the printing starts up, it starts at
the middle of the page, not the top of the missing page (a little too
accurate). It is also difficult to get these printers to start printing back
a few pages. I think all these problems are due to a new method of using a
very large buffer? Perhaps this is necessary with a network printer. In any
case, we have had very few problems (KNOCK KNOCK). And often use the
features of the internal ethernet/print manager option.

Subject: [HP3000-L] LineJet printers

Is anyone out there using the new Linejet printers on a 3000 with the LAN
interface?
It isn't clear to me the advantage of ordering the "HP LineJet Printer
Manager" (C3202D opt.002)
on a 500Q instead of using an external Jet Direct box connected to the
standard parallel interface on the printer.

Can anyone shed some light on this issue?
