When it comes to inkjet printers, there are 2 brands to look at, HP and Epson.
If you want to do photos only, the brand to get is Epson and the models are
the 870, 875DC or 1270. These three printers make use of long term archival
ink and with proper paper and display, the photographs will last beyond 20
years. There is also the Epson 2000P, which is much more expensive. It uses
pigment based ink as opposed to dye based inks and the pictures it generates
will last beyond 100 years before fading.

Currently, all photo magazines rate the Epson 870/875DC/1270 as the printers to
beat when it comes to photo output. They are the yardstick by which all others
are judged. I own the 875DC and I am extremely impressed with the output. An
8X10 picture will cost about $1.50 and a 4X6 will cost about $0.30. These
prices include photo paper and ink. I am now experimenting with different
papers to find the best and most cost efficient combination. I like the
results on Epson paper and on Red River paper. For the inks you have no
choice, only Epson cartridges are used and you cannot refill them.

These printers also do text and graphics.

The HP printers do a very good job with photos, just not as great as the Epson.
Also, the pictures will only last 18 months or so before they start fading.
Currently, Epson is the only one with archival inks on appropriate paper. The
HP inkjets do a better job with text and graphics than the Epson.

Bottom line: If you want excellent, long lasting photos from your printer, get
and Epson 870/875DC/1270. If you want to use the printer for text and graphics
also, get an HP 93x.

Kind regards,

Denys. . .

Subject: EPSON 880 DESKJET: YOUR APPRECIATION???

I have been a long time owner of a b/w laser printer, and now would like to
buy a good quality inkjet printer, with good photo results. Somebody
recommended the EPSON 880.

Could any EPSON 880 owners, or former users, tell me:

* how long they have owned it?
* how expensive is it per printed copy?
* according to your experience, would you rather buy another color printer?
which one?

I would appreciate if you could mark from 5 to 1 (5= excellent /
outstanding; 4= very good; 3= good / fair; 2= not so good; 1= bad):

printing speed:
pages per minute:
text quality:
photos, printing speed:
photos, quality:
cartridges, cost:

Thank you for your co-operation!
