It's been a while since I've written any commands and I was thrown off by
the LaserROM documentation that I have here. It shows the alias variable
name for FINFO function 0 is "EXIST" and it's actually supposed to be
"EXISTS". I thought it was EXISTS but I had forgotten I had to enclose it
in parenthesis. Fortunately I found an example farther down in the
documentation.

I'm not sure what version of LaserROM we have but I was looking in the 5.5
manual set. I tried to look at the documentation on the HP site to see if
it has ever been corrected, but that documentation is very hard to use since
you can't search in it or jump to a page.
