As this is a network printer, may I suggest another approach? Turn
the printer (and, if applicable, the JetDirect box) that has the IP
address (999.999.999.999) in it.
Once the keepalive timer on the system times out (depending on your
settings in NMMGR, this could take ten (10) minutes), your spooler
should go inactive with an error.
After that start the printer and restart the spooler.
