Silly me. I misread your post and didn't realize these directories were
absent from your backup tape.

You did mention that you have all your 5.5 tapes. Why not re-update 5.5
with your appropriate tapes, along with the powerpatch tape? This should
get back all your posix files - apart from any that you may created
yourself. And, if you've applied any additional patches, you will need to
reapply them.

I realize this does take some time, but I can't think of a better way.
