I have seen stats (damn lies?) showing the number of guns owned in various
countries, and gunshot deaths per year in those. The rate of gunshot deaths
per 100,000 guns was almost the same for these countries which have very
different rates of gunshot deaths per head of population - USA, Canada, UK
and Australia. IIRC, it was about 1.4- 1.6 per 100,000 guns.
I found this very interesting - deaths were not related to type of society
or criminals or whatever, just number of guns available.

I have a friend from the UK (Birmingham) who is an ER doctor. He spent
some time in Houston TX because he claimed that he saw more gunshots in one
weekend there than in a month back home and Houston was therefore the place
to train on gunshot wounds since he could get lots of practice. I should
think that any large American city would replace Houston with similar
results.

While I am an advocate of gun ownership, there has to be a way to stop
people shooting people and control does not seem to be the answer. As
others have said, restricting guns only keeps the good guys unarmed, the
bad guys always find a way to get weapons. It seems that personal values
may be the difference.
