Todd Boyd asks:

>Hi all, during our full backup this morning, we received the error
>"STORE IS MARKING MEDIA 1 BAD". This was at 95% completion.

[snip]

>Is there no way to read this tape?!?!?! I'd hate to think I have 95% of
>nothing.

You don't say what type of tape is being used. If it is DDS, you're
probably out of luck. If it is reel to reel, there might be recoverable
data on the tape.

When STORE (or TurboStore) decides that a volume is bad, it rewinds it
and then writes a block at block 0 that indicates that it thinks the
volume is bad. This is nothing more than a literal string.

Now, in the case of DDS, once you write a block at position <n>, all
data at position <n+1> is invalidated and for all practical purposes,
not recoverable. Since in this case, position <n> is block zero, the
answer to your question would be "yes, you have 95% of nothing".

Good luck!
