My first guess is that your Windows 2000 PC is sending encrypted passwords
which cannot be handled by Samba on the HP3000.

You will have to configure your Windows 2000 PC to transmit unencrypted
passwords. You can also look at configuring Samba on the HP to use a
Windows password server. In the [global] of smb.conf, specify

   security = server
   password server = <password server name - usually your Windows domain
controller>
   encrypt passwords = yes
