On many machines (e.g., the 9x9 boxes), it's possible at the boot prompt to
disable much of the self-testing, thus shortening the time for the TC/RS
significantly. This is worthwhile to do if you know you're going to be
rebooting several times during an OS install, for instance. The problem, of
course, is that you don't get that option until AFTER the self-testing has
completed! I would like the option of bypassing the tests to be offered
earlier in the process, either as an optional parameter on the TC command,
or some dialogue early in the process.

Subject: Boot Enhancements
I would like to hear what others think of these proposals. Is this something
worth
discussing in the SIG meeting? Is this something worth asking HP?
I would like to see the following enhancements made:
1. During the boot process after answering the inquiry at the Boot
Prompt and until such time as the system is irreversibly loaded there
should
be the ability to return to the Boot Prompt. Currently the only way to stop
the process is to go all the way back to the RS/TC command. If all one has
done is state their intention to boot from a given path there should be no
need to do self testing all over again. (In theory this capability already
exists.
If one boots from an alternate path the process returns back to the boot
prompt
after it finishes the Update/Install command. So in theory you need not
complete
the boot or return to RS/TC just because you entered a boot path.)
2. After issuing a START command at the ISL prompt and until such time
as the system is irreversibly loaded there should be the ability to cancel
the START and go back to the ISL Prompt.
3. In either case the native intelligence of the processor should be
able to determine whether a configuration change that warrants new self
testing has occurred and act appropriately.
I don't know if this is a problem for anyone else. I have need to restart my
server often due to testing. I am also somewhat typing impaired so I can
have any
number of false starts.
Thanks for thinking about this idea.
The opinions expressed herein are my own and not necessarily those of my
employer.
