Folks,

For many years (certainly longer than I can remember), The PowerHouse
components (Quiz, QTP, Qdesign) have supported reading program source in
Qedit workfiles. In version 4.3 of Qedit, distributed in November/December
1994, we introduced a new Jumbo workfile format. These are still "qedit
files", i.e. code 111, but the control record of the files are in a new
format which would support line lengths beyond the previous limit of 256
bytes, and 64000 lines. Another benefit of the new file format is that the
label can store more information about the file. This means that we can
consider adding more language-specific support for non-cobol languages, for
example, automatic tagging of source code changes.

Before we released Qedit 4.3 we contacted Cognos, advised them of the new
workfile format, and sent them a complete set of replacement routines, which
would read both the old and new format workfiles. After several further
approaches, we've now heard back from Cognos, that they will only consider
supporting the new workfile format if we can make a "business case" for them
to invest the effort. In other words, are there any real customers (theirs
and ours) who are asking for the new workfile format to be supported in
PowerHouse?

Cognos is currently finalising their next "general release" version of
PowerHouse (8.19?). If you feel that it is important that they continue to
support Qedit files fully, please let them know, either by logging a support
call with them (1-800-637-7447) or log your request in the "supported
customers only" section of their website ( http://www.cognos.com ).

Many thanks

/Hans
