So went actually went wrong? First you need to reinstall your operating
system, then the HP tape software, then do a full restore. Which of
these failed?

The latest upgrade of the tape software is not made by HP (CMS) but by
Cheyenne and supposedly much better; but I've asked here about it
several times and nobody has replied. With the Cheyenne software you can
do the full restore from a floppy boot disk and the tape.
