Hi Gilles,
   Um, I use a megahertz 14.4 (non-xjack) on my palmtop.  Couple of things
you should know.  Every 14.4 modem I've tested on the palmtop draws too much
power.  You have to plug in the palmtop externally.
 
   Second, did you use the Megahertz install procedure?  I didn't.  All I
did was go into the config.sys per the hp100lx manual and uncomment the
driver that will enable a modem card.  Perhaps that is part of the problem.

    Well, I've used several using the method described above and not had
a problem.  Let me know if you need some more help.
